November 21st, 2025 – Oslund Udo Little, a Pacific Northwest law firm specializing in juvenile sexual abuse cases, has secured settlements totaling $7 million against Pierce County. The firm claimed that the county failed to protect juvenile detainees from sexual abuse over several decades, spanning the 1980s through the 2000s.
Individuals suffered prolonged sexual abuse, grooming, rape, torture, and other forms of mistreatment by corrections staff while detained as children at Remann Hall, with survivors ranging in age from 10 to 14 at the time of the abuse. On November 14, the council approved settlement amounts of $1.75 million, $1.5 million, $1.3 million, $1 million, $750,000, $550,000, and $170,000. An additional settlement of $195,000 was approved on November 18.
Pierce County officials acknowledged the agreement and the burden the allegations place on past operations at the juvenile detention center. County Council members voted to approve the settlements as part of an effort to bring closure to the victims.
“We appreciate the sensitivity with which Pierce County has handled these claims, and we appreciate that, unlike many other government entities, they are not wasting time and money on defense costs for cases that are indefensible,” firm partner Vanessa Oslund told The News Tribune. “We think that Pierce County is doing the right thing here.”
